Shaved Steak Sandwiches with Caramelized Onions

Make these Shaved Steak Sandwiches with Caramelized Onions for an amazing lunch or dinner. Tender pieces of shaved steak with sweet caramelized onions and melted Harvarti cheese on top of crisp bread rolls!

Ingredients

  • 2 strip steaks apprx 8 oz each
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup caramelized onions
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire
  • 4 slices Havarti cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 Ciabatta bread rolls

Instructions

  • Season the steak on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat a large skillet over high heat and add the olive oil. Add the steaks to the hot skillet and cook for about 2 minutes. Flip over and cook for a further 2 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to rest.
  • Cut open the bread rolls and butter the bread. In the skillet that you cooked the steak in set over medium heat, place all the bread slices in the pan, butter side down. Heat until the bread is crisp, about 3 minutes. Flip over all the bread rolls and get the outside of the bread crisp. Remove from skillet.
  • Thinly slice the cooled steak, removing any fatty bits. Toss the steak together in a bowl with Worcestershire sauce.
  • Lay out all the bread. On the bottom piece, place a slice of cheese. Top it with shaved steak and caramelized onions. Place the top piece of bread. Wrap in foil and place in a 350 degrees oven for about 10 minutes.
  • Serve hot from the oven with your favourite dipping sauces or just as come out of the oven.

Notes

  1. Cooking steak - See the post for Grilled Striploin with Black Peppercorn Sauce for all the tips on cooking steaks. The steaks for this recipe were cooked medium. Adjust cooking time according to how well done your like your steaks.
  2. Caramelizing onions - This recipe used premade caramelized onions. See How to Caramelize Onions for all the handy tips.
  3. Toasting the bread - For best results, use a heavy bottomed skillet. I used a cast iron pan with grill marks. Make sure to toast it until it's completely crisp. Otherwise, you risk the sandwiches going soggy.
  4. Prep ahead - You can make the steak and caramelize the onions the day before making these sandwiches. Just keep the ingredients in the fridge until you are ready to assemble.
  5. Assemble before serving - These sandwiches can be assembled and wrapped in foil up to about one hour before heating and serving.
