This White Chocolate Peppermint Pretzels Recipe makes a great holiday snack. Mini pretzels dipped in melted white chocolate and sprinkled with crushed candy canes. An easy and festive treat that’s great for snacking and even edible gifts.
Who doesn’t love a good sweet and salty snack? I have been cursed with both a sweet and salty tooth, so there’s not too much I’ll pass up when it comes to treats. Years ago, I remember finding chocolate covered pretzels at Walmart. I thought it was the best thing on earth. Yes, I pretty much did. Then I moved to Spain and it was adios to those little delights. Until last year when I found them at my local Aldi. I bought a small pack and pretty much ate them before I left the parking lot. So maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that we can’t get them on a regular basis.
So, what about making them yourself Julia? Well, that’s exactly what I did recently and they were a hit with the two teens and myself. But I switched it up with a holiday twist using white chocolate and added crushed up candy canes. A great treat to make with little ones and they won’t last long!
Here’s What We Need To Make The White Chocolate Peppermint Pretzels Recipe
- Mini Pretzels
- White Chocolate
- Candy canes
REMEMBER, The full recipe and instructions is always found at the end of the post in the recipe card.
How To Melt & Temper Chocolate
- Add 2/3 of the chocolate to a double boiler – set the double boiler over medium heat and stir until the chocolate melts. This will take 3-4 minutes.
- Remove from heat and add remaining chocolate – now take the double boiler off the heat and add the remaining chocolate. Stir until it is completely melted. This process is called tempering chocolate and we do it so the chocolate doesn’t melt once it sets.
What is a double boiler? A double boiler is just a double saucepan. The bottom layer is for adding water, and the top layer for adding whatever you are melting or cooking. You can alternatively use a heatproof glass bowl over a simmering saucepan of water.
Coat The Pretzels in the White Chocolate
- Lay out a sheet of parchment paper – we’re doing this to lay the pretzels on after we dip them. Show here they are on a cooling rack but parchment paper is better to use.
- Dip the pretzels in the melted chocolate – use a fork to dip the pretzels in the chocolate. Place on the parchment paper after they are dipped.
- Drizzle over the chocolate – if you don’t want to dip them completely, you can drizzle over the chocolate. To do this, lay the pretzels out on parchment paper and just drizzle over the chocolate with a spoon.
- Add crushed candy – after you have dipped all the pretzels, sprinkle over the crushed peppermint candy canes.
- Leave to dry – allow the pretzels 1 to 1 1/2 hours to set and dry completely.
Enjoy the Chocolate Pretzels
- They make great edible gifts – simply package them up in cellophane bags with a ribbon and gift tag.
- Great for cookie trays– they would also look great on a cookie platter with a mixed selection of cookies.
- Snacks for the kids – your kids will love these. Serve them as a snack, with popcorn at a holiday movie night or added to a lunch box.
What Substitutions Can I Make To This Holiday Treat
- Mini Pretzels – I used mini sized pretzels for this recipe, but large pretzels will work and you can easily use pretzel sticks if you like.
- White chocolate – My preference for this recipe was a good quality white chocolate. But, there is nothing wrong with using milk chocolate, dark chocolate, semi sweet chocolate….it will all work.
- Candy canes – You can use any kind of crushed up peppermint candy for this recipe. I just happen to use candy canes.
How Can I Store This Pretzel Candy and How Long Will It Last
- On the counter – you can store these in an airtight container on the counter and they will keep up about two weeks.
- In a gift bag– use a small plastic gift bag and tie it with a ribbon . Makes a great holiday gift for all your candy lovers out there.
Don’t store in the fridge – I don’t recommend this as condensation will form as they come to room temperature.
Tips From Julia to Get These Chocolate Pretzels Just Right
- Choose great chocolate – keep in mind when choosing your chocolate, to buy something that you actually like…lol. It’s going to be the coating for the pretzels and plays a huge factor in the overall flavour. I used Lindt white chocolate for this recipe.
- Temper the chocolate – make sure to not skip this step, it’s important! Tempering the chocolate will ensure that it stays set and does not melt at room temperature.
- Let them set completely – don’t try to store them or stack them if they haven’t set completely. They should set just like the ones you buy in the store. Once set completely you can put them in bags, tupperwear containers, jars, etc.
I hope you enjoy the chocolate pretzels friends and I’ll see you all in a few days with another holiday inspired treat!
