Tips For Choosing Avocados & Making Perfect Guacamole
Have you ever gotten home from the supermarket only to be disappointed with the avocados? We’ve all been there. Not only are you left with no avocados for your recipe, you’ve just wasted money. Let’s face it, avocados aren’t cheap. So, here’s a few things to look out for.
- No soft spots – if you find an avocado that has soft spots on it, put it back. Those soft spots will most likely mean they will be overripe in those areas and already turning brown.
- Choose firm but slightly soft avocados – yes they still have to be firm, but just starting to go soft. Just push gently at the stem of the avocado and if it slightly gives, the avocado is ready to eat.
Make The Black Olive Spiders
I used pitted black olives for this recipe as black olives work great as spiders!
Half the olive – using a small sharp knife, cut the olive through the middle. Keep one side in tact and cut the other half into 6 small strips Use the pieces to make spiders. Make as many as you like to decorate the guacamole.
Assemble and Decorate The Halloween Guacamole
- Choose a tray or plate – I made just enough for about 4 people in this recipe so I didn’t need a big serving dish . I just used a medium sized black plate. You choose whatever size suits how much you are making.
- Place Guacamole on plate – spread out the guacamole, leaving space around the edges to put the corn tortilla chips. You can also put those in a separate dish if you prefer.
- Arrange spiders on guacamole – using your sliced olives, make spiders over the top of the guacamole. Do this according to how many you would like to use.
Can I make The Guacamole in Advance
If you’re having a Halloween party or dinner, you’ll want to get as much done before hand as you can, so here’s what you can do.
- Make guacamole – make the guacamole as stated in the recipe below. Place it in an airtight container and squeeze over a little extra lime juice. Place a piece of plastic wrap directly over the guacamole, gently pressing down on the guacamole. Cover and refrigerate. This can be done 2 – 3 hours before serving. Just give an extra stir before serving.
- Cut olives – cut your olives up and store them in a container in the fridge. You can do this as early as the day before.
- Get ready serving dishes – have ready whatever serving dish you are planning to use. This way, all you have to do it put it together at the last minute before serving.
