It doesn’t get a whole lot better than making your own homemade Hamburger Buns. Why not impress yourself and make a batch for your next backyard barbecue.

Making Food For The Love of Making Food

Sometimes making food isn’t about convenience, keeping it quick, or rushing out of the kitchen
 on the count of five.  There are times when it’s about loving working in the kitchen.

Yes, that’s right.  You see for me, and like everyone I am sure, there are days with not even 5 minutes to turn around and days where minutes stretch into hours and time is on your side.  My favourite thing to do in my free time is create new recipes.  Or at least,  puttering around the kitchen with a cup of tea…ha!  But when I do have time, I love nothing more than to spend a morning or afternoon lost in the kitchen creating away at something or another.  Lately, those days have been far and few between.  So when I do that the time and the creativity, I put it to work the best way I can.

So after having a pretty busy time lately, I found myself with a morning and a blank slate.  I was thrilled.  I didn’t have to leave the house for one single thing.  There was nothing outstanding on my never ending “to do” list, and I felt a wave of wanting to make something new. 

And that’s exactly what I did.  So let’s take a look at what I got up to.

As I was just saying, sometimes food is about time, patience and a little bit of love thrown into the mix.  I think bread falls into this category.  It’s so easy to nip to the bakery and buy a loaf of whatever you need.  Everything from french loaves to brioche rolls, you can get it all. 

But why not make your own?  I know, many of you are probably thinking “who has time for that!”.  Exactly, I get it.  Trust me, I usually buy bread.  I feed a family and am not about to get on the everyday bread making treadmill anytime soon. 

However, yesterday morning, I indulged myself because there was time and I was in the bread making mood.

About Bread Making

Okay, so the thing about bread is that sometimes you do have to stray from the recipe.  At least this is my experience is attempting and failing more times than I would like to admit.  It’s kind of a balance between the recipe and feel.  So how does this go for novice bakers?  Well, it can be hugely successful if you understand what you are looking for.  And that’s what I’m about to get into in just a second.  This might get long winded, so skip straight to the recipe at the bottom or click here to take to you straight to the recipe format!

It isn’t Rocket Science, It’s actually Pretty EAsy

Making the dough for these buns isn’t difficult and it really only takes 10 minutes.  Follow the recipe, remember humidity or dryness in the air play a part in how much water to add.  It’s give or take a little.  For this recipe, you don’t want the dough too dry.  So if after you added all your water, you notice the dough is still really dry, don’t be afraid to add a little more water.  You don’t want to super sticky, but just so it all comes together with no dry flour on the bowl.

Then you knead the dough until it’s soft and bounces back when you touch it.  For example, if you press the dough, you should see a small indent and be able to watch it slowly bounce back.  This is when you know your dough is ready to cover and leave to rise.

As for the rise time in all  breads, it just varies.  There are recipes that say 30 minutes and some that say two hours.  But honestly you are just looking for your dough to double in size and be real puffy like you see in this picture below.  If you achieve this in 30 minutes, then it’s ready.  But if not, just let it sit and the magic will happen.

Once you dough have proved, punch it down until it deflates.  All that hard work gone!  Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into a ball like you see here.

Then, cut it in half using a sharp knife…..

Then cut each half into four pieces……

Next, you’re going to roll each piece of dough into a ball…..

You can use a greased baking tray or line one with parchment paper.  I pretty much always use parchment paper.  So, after you make your balls, you are going to flatten them out to about 3 inch disks like you see here.  Place them all on the baking tray.

Cover them and leave them to rise until they are completely risen and puffy.  This will probably take about an hour. But again, it could be shorter or longer depending on a million things!

This is what you’re aiming for.  Aren’t they pretty!

Sesame seeds are optional, but I think they add a bit extra to the buns, right?  So use a egg white wash to gently brush the tops of the buns and then sprinkle over the seeds.

Bake in a preheated 375 F degrees oven and Ta-Da!  Beautiful home made hamburger buns that will make anyone proud!

These hamburger buns really were great.  I had one yesterday with a leftover turkey patty from the night before and they were just delicious.  Even my husband commented on how professional they looked.  He doens’t notice much when it comes to food, but he did pay heed to these.

Got Time, Make Them

So, if you find yourself with a few hours to spare and like creating things, why not give these a try.  Bread is definitely a labour of love.  But worth it when you get great results.

For the buns:

  • 3 1/2 Cups flour
  • 1 Tablespoons dry active yeast
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons salt
  • 1 Egg beaten
  • 3/4 Cups warm water * more if needed


  • Egg white beaten
  • Sesame seeds


  • In a large mixing bowl combine the flour, yeast, sugar and salt. Stir to combine.
  • Add the egg and the water. Stir with a wooden spoon until it starts to come together into a dough.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and start to knead the dough. Push it down and continue to knead and flip the dough until it bounces back when touched. This will take anywhere between 5 – 10 minutes. Cover the dough and leave it to rise until it’s doubled in size. Between 1 – 2 hours.
  • After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it into a ball. Place it on a lightly floured surface and cut it in half. Then cut each section into four equal parts. You will have eight pieces of dough.
  • Roll each piece into a ball.
  • Grease or line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Place all the dough balls on the tray, equally spaced apart. Flatten each ball to about a 3 inch disk. Cover and leave to rise until they are large and puffy, this will be more than doubled in size. About an hour.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Lightly brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds.
  • Bake for about 15 – 18 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and cooked through.
  • Can serve straight away or store in an airtight container to use in a day or two. Can be frozen.
