Ingredients

  • Cherry tomatoes – Use firm cherry or grape tomatoes for the best look.
  • Black olives – I used pitted black olives.
  • Mozzarella pearls – Mozzarella pearls are available in most supermarkets in the cheese section. You should find them next to the fresh mozzarella cheese in the chiller section.
  • Balsamic glaze – This is a thick and slightly sweet glaze. You can buy it with the other vinegar’s at your supermarket.
  • Halloween cocktail sticks – I liked the look of the skeleton cocktail sticks for these cute Halloween skewers.

Instructions

  1. Cut tomatoes – Slice the cherry tomatoes in half cross ways.
  2. Organise ingredients – Have all of your ingredients set up and ready to use. The sliced cherry tomatoes, mozzarella pearls and the black olives.
  3. Assemble – Pick up a Halloween cocktail stick and skewer half of a tomato, then a mozzarella pearl, next the other half of the cherry tomato and the black olive. Repeat for all cocktail sticks.
  4. Garnish and serve – Arrange all of the skewers on a Halloween serving dish. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and add some salad leaves for decoration if desired.

Recipe Tips

  • Choose firm tomatoes – Make sure to choose firm cherry tomatoes. If they are too soft, they will not hold together on the skewers.
  • Prep ahead – You can prep these in advance and keep them in the fridge until serving. Just don’t add the balsamic glaze until just before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is balsamic glaze?

Balsamic glaze is a thick sauce made by simmering balsamic vinegar. The vinegar reduces and creates a tangy and sweet flavour.

Are black olives and kalamata olives the same?

No, black olives and kalamata olives are not the same. Although kalamata are a type of black olive, they are different. Kalamata olives are ripened naturally on the tree and have a very intense flavour. Regular black olives are much milder and they do not ripen on the tree.
