The rush is on friends! We’re something like 10 days to Christmas! Who’s ready? Well, not me. And that’s okay, because I’m never really ready..ha! Not having small kids anymore does make Christmas a whole lot easier though. No sneaking around, hiding presents and all that stuff. As fun as it was, I’m happy with this chapter.

Now we can shift the focus to food! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made these Bacon Wrapped Dates with Pecans. It’s in my top 5 easy appetizers to make. Every time I’ve made them for guests, there have never been leftovers. Always a great sign of some well loved food.

What You Need To Make The Bacon Wrapped Dates with Pecans

Okay the ingredient list is pretty small, which is one of things that makes this such a great appetizer.

  • Bacon – I used thin streaky bacon. Avoid thick cut bacon as it will be more difficult to wrap and cook properly.
  • Dates – I used the dates you buy in the baking section that were pitted. You could use fresh Medjool Dates if your supermarket carries them. No doubt, they are better. But the ones in the bags work just fine. Medjool Dates are fresh produce and you will find them in the fresh section of your supermarket.
  • Pecans – Just regular whole pecans.
  • Toothpicks – to secure the bacon around the dates

Stuffing The Dates

I used pitted dates so I just had to slice them open and stuff the pecan inside. Which made this very easy. However, you can used dates with pits, you just have to take them out and it’s easy. Just use a knife to make a slit and you can just easily pull it out.

Wrap The Bacon Around The Date and Secure with a Toothpick

  • Cut the bacon strips in half.
  • Take a strip and completely wrap it around the date.
  • Secure it with a toothpick by inserting it through the center. It will push through the pecan
  • Arrange on a large baking tray and bake in a preheated 375 degree F/190 degree C oven for 15 – 20 minutes or until bacon is cooked through and a little crisp

And there you have it friends, they are ready to devour! These are great fresh from the oven and they even stay well sitting around for a while at room temperature. I don’t recommend baking them way in advance though. They are best fresh.

Yes, you can prepare them in advance, pop them in the fridge and then bake before serving.

How To Dress Up an Appetizer Platter

If you think these little bites look to drab on a serving dish all on their own, add greenery! It’s amazing how a touch of greenery goes a long way. I put these over arugula leaves to dress the plate up a little and it worked a treat. And yes, you can eat it too!

We had these nibblies on Christmas Eve and they were so yummy! I’ve had cream cheese in dates before but the pecans blew that out of the water! The only thing I added was to toast the nuts first. Great recipe!

What an easy and scrumptious appetizer! I’m in the same boat, Julia – my kids are teenagers. And although I kinda miss the whole Santa thing, it was A LOT of effort! I’m happy to focus on food now too ๐Ÿ™‚
