What’s This Celery Appetizer Like
- Difficulty – This is a really easy recipe to make. You can make the filling up to a day in advance which makes for easy entertaining.
- Taste – A crisp and fresh appetizer that is great as a light bite before dinner.
- Serving – This recipe will make 24 little appetizers. You can adjust serving size in the recipe card at the end of the post.
Ingredients
- Cream cheese – I used full fat softened cream cheese as the base of the filling for the celery.
- Heavy cream – A very small amount of heavy cream is used to lighten the cream cheese.
- Lemon juice – A tablespoon of lemon juice is added to the filling to add to the flavour.
- Fresh chives – I used finely chopped fresh chives as the big pop of flavour for my cream cheese filling.
- Dried herbs – This recipe used a combination of dried basil and dried dill for flavour.
- Seasonings – I used garlic powder, onion powder and salt as seasonings for the cream cheese filling.
- Celery – Fresh crisp celery is what you will need for this quick and easy appetizer.
NOTE, The full recipe and ingredient list can be found in the recipe card below.
Instructions
- Combine ingredients – In a medium sized mixing bowl combine the cream cheese, heavy cream, lemon juice, fresh chives (reserving a few for garnish), dried dill, dried basil, garlic powder, onion powder and salt.
- Mix – Use a hand held mixer and mix until it’s smooth, about one minute.
- Fill celery – Lay out your celery stick pieces and use a teaspoon to fill the celery. Repeat for all celery pieces.
- Garnish and serve – Arrange the celery sticks on a serving platter and garnish with extra fresh chopped chives. Serve immediately.
Recipe Tips
- Prep ahead filling – You can prep this filling ahead up to five days before using. Just make sure it’s covered and kept in the fridge.
- Clean and store celery – Celery can be prepped and kept in an airtight container up to two days before using. I suggest washing it and allowing it to completely dry before storing to avoid it going limp. Store it in an airtight container on top of paper towels to absorb any moisture.
Substitutions
- Full fat cream cheese – You can easily use light cream cheese for this recipe to lower the calories and fat content in the recipe.
- Heavy cream – Alternatively you can use light cream, half and half or even Greek yogurt or plain yogurt.
- Fresh chives – I loved the flavour of fresh chives, but you can use dried chives if you don’t have fresh.
- Additions and flavour changes – Feel free to add some finely diced scallions or bacon bits to level it up a bit. And if you like heat, why not add about 1/2 teaspoon of hot paprika.
