Some years back, I was invited to a birthday dinner at a beautiful restaurant and the food was amazing. One of the things that stood out in my memory, was the fried goats cheese appetizer. I knew immediately, I had to figure out a way to recreate it at home. Here is my simple and tasty version that you’re all going to love!

About the Fried Goat Cheese Bites

  • Difficulty – I’d probably rate these at a medium difficulty level. Although the recipe is relatively easy, you need to pay attention to the frying time so you don’t end up burning the cheese.
  • Taste – If you love goat cheese, you’ll love these appetizers. A warm melted goat cheese with a crisp crust!
  • Serving – These are great served on their own with dipping sauces or added to salads like the Flavours of Fall Salad.

Ingredients

  • Goat cheese log – These are about 8 oz in size and can be found in the chiller section of your supermarket.
  • Bread crumbs – Very fine bread crumbs work best for this recipe.
  • Seasonings & herbs – I used garlic powder and oregano to season the bread crumbs.
  • Egg – A whisked egg is used to dip the cheese into before coating it in bread crumbs.
  • Oil – Vegetable oil works best for frying.

Instructions

  1. Cut the goat cheese log into 10 slices.
  2. On a large clean plate, combine the bread crumbs with the oregano and garlic powder. Whisk to combine.
  3. Dip each slice of cheese in the whisked egg and then coat in bread crumbs. Repeat for all and place on a clean plate.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet set over medium to high heat. Add the cheese, making sure the oil sizzles. Cook for 2 – 3 minutes until golden and then flip over and cook for a further 2 minutes or until golden.
  5. Remove from pan and drain quickly on paper towels. Transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately.

Recipe Tips

  • Cut when cold – Cut the goat cheese into rounds while it is still cold. If you attempt to do it when it’s warm it will be too soft and will likely fall apart on you. I cut these into 1/2 inch rounds and I got 10 from my lot. Try not to slice them too thin or they will fall apart when frying.
  • Prep ahead – These can be prepped and kept in the fridge up to one day before cooking. Just cover them and keep them cold until you fry them.
  • Make sure oil sizzles – Test one first to make sure it sizzles when it hits the pan because you don’t want it smoking though. If it is smoking, reduce the heat a little. Add them all to the pan and cook for about 2 – 3 minutes until golden then flip them over. Cook for a further 2 – minutes until golden all over and cheese is melted.
  • Don’t overcook – Be careful you don’t cook them too long or the cheese will completely melt and it will be an oily mess.
  • Lightly pat with paper towels – Drain on paper towels just to get the grease off and then place on a plate. Make sure to get them off the paper towels quickly otherwise they will stick. Trust me on that one!

Serving and Storage

  • Serving – Serve them straight away with your favourite dip. I served these with a basic Minted Garlic and Yogurt dip. It was delicious. I think they would be great with a drizzle of honey, or even jam! Yes jam! Try what ever you like. And they are even tasty just as they are.
  • Storage – Although these are best fresh you can store them up to two days in the fridge in an airtight container. To reheat, place them on a baking tray and reheat in a 300 degrees oven for about 5 – 10 minutes.
