Fluffy Buttermilk Waffles

Okay, so when it comes to Breakfast are you sweet or savoury? I got to say, growing up I was sweet all the way. Pass me anything with sugar before the crack of dawn and I was happy. Years passed, I grew up and found a love for all things savoury.

That being said, I do love all things pancakes, crepes and waffles! I mean they are household names and everyone loves them. And I right or am I right! If you love waffles as well, take a look at these Fluffy Buttermilk Waffles!

What Are These Waffles Like

  • Difficulty – Waffles are pretty easy to make. You do need a waffle maker though. It’s much like pancake batter and they cook quickly.
  • Taste – If you love Pancakes, you’re probably going to love these waffles. They are light on the inside and golden and a little crisp on the outside. They have just a hint of sweetness and a light texture.
  • Serving – This recipe makes 6 standard square waffles. In the recipe card at the end of the post you can easily adjust serving size to suit your needs.

Ingredients

  • Flour – I use all purpose flour for all general baking. Flour is the main component for the waffles and adds structure.
  • Baking powder + baking soda – This is what gives the waffles the rise you are looking for.
  • Granulated white sugar – Just a little sugar gives a hint of sweetness
  • Salt – Enhances flavour.
  • Eggs – Eggs are used as a binding ingredient to hold the waffles together.
  • Buttermilk – This is a thick rich milk that helps give the waffles a rise when combined with baking soda.
  • Melted butter – This adds extra richness and flavour to the waffles.

NOTE, you will always find full ingredient list and recipe in the recipe card at the end of the post.

Instructions

  1. Preheat waffle maker – Preheat your waffle maker and set aside. Have ready a baking tray with a cooling rack on top. Set aside.
  2. Combine dry ingredients – Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk to combine and set aside.
  3. Combine wet ingredients – In a small bowl, combine eggs, buttermilk and the melted butter. Whisk to combine.
  4. Finish waffle batter – Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients and whisk until combined. Be careful not to over mix the batter, it’s okay for there to be a few lumps.
  5. Cook waffles – Grease the waffle maker with butter. Pour in batter just enough to fill all the holes. Put lid down and cook for about 2-3 minutes or until golden and risen. Remove from waffle maker and place on the cooling rack on top of the baking tray. Repeat for remaining waffles.
  6. Serve – Serve with butter and maple syrup.

Recipe Tips and Substitutions

  • Use buttermilk – Buttermilk really adds to the fluffiness of these waffles. Try to use it if you can. If not, mix 1 teaspoon of vinegar with whole diary milk and whisk to combine. Let it sit for a few minutes before using.
  • Don’t over mix – Over mixing the batter will possibly result in chewy and flat waffles. It’s okay if there are a few small lumps in the batter.
  • Cook over high heat – My waffle maker only has one setting, hot! Honestly it will not burn your waffles. In fact, it will help them get a more golden colour and become crisper.
  • Tips for reheating – Place them on a cooing rack on top of a baking tray. Place in a 400ºF/200ºC oven uncovered for about 8 minutes to get the hot and crisp.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is buttermilk?

Buttermilk is a fermented dairy milk. It’s often used in baking to help with rising and keeping baked goods tender and moist.

What is the difference between waffle batter and pancake batter?

Waffle batter is thicker and contains a higher fat content than pancake batter. This is what helps give waffles a crisp exterior. Pancake batter is generally thinner and uses a higher milk percentage.
