This Basmati Rice with Lime and Cilantro is easy to make, fresh and flavourful. Goes great with Tex Mex and Mexican inspired dishes or Indian dishes.

Easy rice side dishes have never been more tasty than this Basmati Rice with Lime and Cilantro. I’ve made this rice dish quite a few times and each time it’s just as refreshing and delicious. What Is This Rice Recipe Like

  • Difficulty – Cooking rice is pretty straight forward. Just make sure to follow the recipe correctly and measure correctly. You should get perfect light and fluffy rice every single time.
  • Taste – This rice is light and fluffy with a lime cilantro flavour.
  • Serving – This recipe will easily make four generous servings. In the recipe card at the end of the post you can adjust serving size to suit your needs.

Basmati Rice with Lime and Cilantro

Ingredients

  • Olive oil – Olive oil is used to lightly fry the rice before adding the water and cooking the rice.
  • Basmati rice – I used long grain Basmati rice for this dish.
  • Water – I used water to cook the rice.
  • Butter – A small amount of butter is added to the cooked rice to add a great flavour.
  • Lime juice – I added the juice of an entire lime to the rice after it was cooked.
  • Lime zest – Zest helps enhance the lime flavour.
  • Cilantro – Fresh chopped cilantro adds a punch of freshness and flavour the the rice dish.
  • Salt – Salt helps enhance the overall flavours of the dish.

Instructions

  1. Fry the uncooked rice in olive oil – In a medium saucepan set over medium heat, add the olive oil and bring to a sizzle. Add the uncooked rice and stir to completely coat the rice and give it a bit of a fry for about one minute.
  2. Add water and cook rice – Reduce heat to low and add all of the water. Cover and leave to cook for about 15 minutes or until all of the water has absorbed and rice is fully cooked.
  3. Fluff cooked rice – Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork. Start from the top and fluff from the top down to the bottom of the saucepan until all the rice is separated and fluffy.
  4. Add all seasonings and and lime juice – Transfer to a serving bowl and add the butter, lime juice, lime zest, cilantro and salt. Stir well to combine and serve.

Recipe Tips

  • Measure ingredients correctly – Make sure to measure the rice and water correctly. If you use too much water, the rice will become mushy.
  • Dry fry the uncooked rice – Don’t skip the step of quickly frying the uncooked rice in olive oil. This will ensure the rice cooks fluffy and separates easily.
  • Fluff the cooked rice – When the rice is cooked, start fluffing it up with a fork from the top down. This will ensure you don’t have any rice clumps and it all separates perfectly.

Substitutions

  • Basmati rice – Although I recommend using basmati rice, you can you other types of long grain rice. Just keep in mind it may not be as light and fluffy once cooked.
  • Cilantro – Not a fan of cilantro? You can use parsley!
  • Lime juice – For a slightly different flavour, you can opt to use lemon juice and lemon zest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Basmati rice the same as long grain rice?

Basmati rice is a variety of long grain rice. That being said, not all long grain rice varities are the same. Basmati rice is aromatic, long and slender. It tends to be fluffy and light when it’s cooked. Other long grain rices are a little shorter and thicker.
