Instructions

  1. Peel and thinly slice the onions.  Discard the onion skin.
  2. Heat the butter in a large skillet set over medium to high heat.  Add the onions and give a good stir around.  Increase heat to high and brown the onions for about 5 minutes, stirring regularly.  Reduce heat to medium low and continue to cook the onions for about 25 more minutes until they are soft and caramelized.  Stir onions occasionally as they cook to avoid burning or sticking.  Remove onions from the heat.
  3. Place cooked onions on a large cutting board and roughly chop with a knife.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder and salt.  Mix on high speed for about 2 minutes.  Fold in the caramelized onions and fresh parsley.  Combine well.

Notes About The French Onion Dip

  • Slice the onions thin – for best results, you should slice the onions as thin as you can.  Not only will this result in better caramelized onions, they will cook slightly quicker.
  • Use butter or oil – you can use butter or oil when caramelizing onions.  I like butter because of the flavour.
  • Don’t cook over high heat – I like to start them off on high heat for just few minutes, then reduce heat as they cook and caramelize.  By keeping the heat high, you will risk burning the onions.
